A REALTOR® Member who has held membership in the National Association as a REALTOR® for a cumulative period of forty (40) years, is eligible for REALTOR® Emeritus status. REALTOR® Emeritus members do not pay dues to the National Association and are exempt from the NAR mandated Code of Ethics Training requirement. REALTOR® Emeritus is a “status”, not a designation. For more information or application deadline, visit the REALTOR® Emeritus Program website.

History of the REALTOR® Emeritus Program
- The REALTOR® Emeritus Program was established in 1974, “to recognize the loyalty and service to the National Association of those REALTORS® having been members for 50 years”.
- A change in 2004 reduced the longevity requirement from 50 years of REALTOR® Membership to 40 years.
As part of the NAR Membership Structures Review done in 2012, it was recommended that a work group be established to consider changes in the program. The group was composed of REALTOR® members and local association executives and they decided it was in the long-term interests of the association to keep the program’s original intent to annually recognize a few meritorious individuals. The group recommended adding to the 40-year requirement an additional requirement of volunteer service to the national organization.
- The group decided it was in the long-term interests of the association to keep the program’s original intent to annually recognize a few meritorious individuals by adding to the 40-year requirement an additional requirement of volunteer service to the national organization, either as a member of a national committee or as a Federal Political Coordinator.
At the 2013 REALTORS® Conference & Expo, the Delegate Body approved the group’s recommendations, amending Article III, Section 9 of the NAR Constitution, which outlines eligibility. Beginning with applications filed in 2015, in addition to the forty (40) years of membership, a candidate member must also have completed at least one (1) year of service at the National Association level. A temporary measure was also adopted, allowing the one (1) year service requirement to also be met through service at the state or local level. However, this provision was sunset at the end of 2019.
